New Experiences
This has been a week of new experiences. Last Thursday, Cecil and I were invited up to Elizabeth's and Chris' home for supper and to see Spires walking. He was speeding all over the house -- so proud of himself. My, he is growing so quickly. Then, on Saturday night, Cecil and I met friends at The Capital Theater on the Laurens Square for a movie. This old theater has been refurbished by a Laurens couple -- it has a "Fifties-style" soda shop in the entrance and the lovely old theater at the back with tin ceiling and chandeliers and new, plush theater seats. They were showing the new Batman movie and the little theater was packed. Such a nice addition to our community and so convenient. Finally, yesterday, Martha Miller, Carolyn Teague and I took a road trip to Edgefield, SC. Our mission -- to find peaches! But before going to the produce market, we stopped in at the Old Edgefield Grill for lunch. The building is a classic Southern Victorian home built in 1906 which was converted to a restaurant in 1999. We were seated in front of a large bay window shaded by a massive Magnolia tree. We were discussing the books we had recently read when our order arrived. Martha then led us in prayer. After our "amens" were said, a man who had been seated at a table next to ours came over to say how nice it was that we had prayed together as friends. He and his wife also recomended a book for us to read (The Shack, for those interested.) The moral: be careful what you say in a restaurant -- people are eavesdropping! They then left. But a few minutes later the man was back, placing a book, The Friendship Book, on our table, autographed by the author. Yep, you guessed it. Our new "friend" was Steve Wingfield, an evangelist who has conducted "Christian Festivals" around the world, has taught courses on evangelism at Billy Graham's, The Cove, and also at Tyndale Theological Seminary in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. ( http://www.stevewingfield.org/) His home is in Harrisonburg, VA, but was visiting a friend who had a home in the area and that is how he and his wife happened to be at a restaurant in little, sleepy Edgefield. Oh, we ladies did find our peaches -- and fresh tomatoes, butter beans and peas. Lovely day.
